Community Wind Farm in South Dakota

Dakota Plains Energy, an Aberdeen-based wind farm developer, along with the South Central Wind Association, plans to construct and operate a 1GW community wind farm.

The farm, named Dakota Community Wind, is to be built in the Gregory and Tripp County areas of South Dakota, which has abundant wind resources.

South Dakota Wind Partners, a community investor group, is developing a wind project in central South Dakota. The 10.5MW farm is located adjacent to the 151.5MW PrairieWinds wind farm owned by the Basin Electric Power Cooperative. PrairieWinds is to take care of the operation of the farm and also purchase the energy generated.

With a wind power capacity of 1222MW the state of South Dakota ranks 11th in the country for highest installed capacity, according to the Windpower Monthly Windicator.
