Construction of Lai Chau Hydro Power Project in Vietnam Commences

A ground-breaking ceremony has been recently conducted for the 1200 MW Lai Chau Hydro Power Project located in Nam Hang Commune in the Lai Chau Province of Vietnam. This project is expected to start power generation by 2017 and is owned by the Electricity of Viet Nam (EVN).

The total investment for this project is $1.8 billion. The first turbine is  to start operations by 2017. The project would have a total of three turbines with 400 MW capacity each, and is expected to produce 4.7 billion kWh on an annual basis. This plant is to be constructed on the Da River. EVN would take care of the construction of the plant, development of the infrastructure for the project and also the resettlement of local populace.

Recently, the 2400 MW Son La Hydro Project has commenced operations in Vietnam. This project is said to be the largest hydroelectric power station in Southeast Asia. According to a Director in the Management Board of the Son La Plant, a total of six turbines were installed and the first turbine has already been connected to the national power grid.
