Nigerian Airspace Management Agency Plans to Install Solar Power for Radar Coverage Towers

The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) has announced its plans to install solar power to electrify its Total Radar Coverage of Nigeria (TRACON) sites in nine states of the country.

NAMA will spend around N978 million to complete the solar installation this year. The chosen airport sites such as Jos, Akure, Owerri, Yola, Calabar, Maiduguri, Enugu, Sokoto, Ibadan, Kaduna, Ilorin and Benin will also have Automatic Voltage Regulators along with the solar installations to supply a steady flawless power required for air navigation. According to Alhaji Ibrahim Auyo, NAMA’s Managing Director, the solar installation was chosen to overcome the perennial power problem in powering the required equipments.

The agency is currently involved in total overhaul of all its control towers located in 13 airports all over the country. The control towers are fitted with the new and latest models of consoles and VHF radios to manage the air traffic control.
