Ontario Power Authority Awards Wind Project for Algonquin Power + Utilities

Algonquin Power & Utilities (APUC) declared that Ontario Power Authority (OPA) has awarded the company, a 75 MW wind project.

The Amherst Island Wind Project is situated over Amherst Island in the village of Stella, which is located around 25 kilometers southwest of Kingston, Ontario. OPA has awarded the contract under its second round of Feed-in-tariff program.

Algonquin Power (APCo), the electric power generation, the auxiliary company of Algonquin Power & Utilities, will develop the project. The wind project is anticipated to deploy one of the leading wind power generation technologies and is estimated to generate around 247 GWh of clean energy every year. The finance required for the project will be arranged and declared after fulfilling the permit and the other pre-construction conditions of the project.

The company is planning to submit its renewable energy application in the summer of 2012. The construction of the wind project will start after the receipt of the approval, which is anticipated to take a period of 12 months. The wind project was originally initiated by Gaia Power.
