The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) declared that it has partnered with SolarWorld, a producer of crystalline solar technology, to build an 11.6 MW solar DC project.
The Board of Water and Power Commissioners had given consent for the project in December 2010. The project has completed the soil testing and preliminary designs and detailed designing of the project is currently afoot.
SolarWorld will provide the complete system technology, high-power yielding solar panels and will supply the balance-of-system parts, which includes SMA America manufactured inverters, to convert the power generated from the solar systems to 10 MW AC power. LADWP will own the system, perform the installations and operate it. The solar system is to be built over a 42-acre site in the desert located, Adelanto Switching and Converter Station of LADWP. The system will incorporate novel design features such as interconnectivity to an important bulk-grid substation as well as to a cutting edge 1000 V solar power system. For the purpose of reducing the site preparation costs the solar panels will be installed over the SolarWorld manufactured Sunfix ground-mount systems boasting aluminum structures.
The solar project is anticipated to generate around 22,400 MWH of solar power during the first year of operation and will generate around 515,700 MWH in its 25 year life period. The power generated from the facility is enough to supply electricity to 85,000 homes and will offset around 290,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide discharges in a period of 25 years.
