Poudre Valley Rural Electric Association Signs Power Purchase Accord with Northern Water

The power purchase accord reached between Poudre Valley Rural Electric Association and Northern Water has cleared the way for the building of a new hydroelectric power generating station at Carter Lake.

The project to be ventured at a cost of $6 million will have two 1,200 kW turbines to generate power from the flowing water of the lake and a power house measuring 2,000 square foot. It will also include links to the existent Carter Lake Second opening and the St. Vrain Supply Canal. The project will receive around $2 million as low interest bearing loan from the Colorado Water Resources and Power Development Authority.

The signed accord will allow PVREA to receive around 10 million kilowatt-hours of power generated from the Carter Lake hydropower facility every year. The power is enough to meet the electricity requirements of around 1,000 homes. The PVREA transmission structure will be linked to the power production facility through a 600 feet power line connectivity. The project is anticipated to generate around $600,000 every year and will get completed by summer 2012.
