Lakeland Electric to Associate with SunEdison to Build Solar Farm

Lakeland Electric, a Lakeland, Florida-based public power utility company, has declared its plans to associate with SunEdison, a Maryland-based company that develops, finances, operates and manages solar power plants, to develop a solar farm at the west end of the runway on Hamilton Road. This solar farm will be first of its kind near the airport of Florida.

SunEdison will install around 18,000 solar panels at the solar farm covering one acre area. The non-reflective type of solar panels planned for the solar farm that remain close to the airport will track the movement of the sun all through the day; and absorb maximum sunlight to produce increased quantity of electric power. The power generated from 5.5 MW solar farm will be enough to supply electricity to around 2,000 houses.

Lakeland Electric will buy the electricity generated at the solar farm from SunEdison and will also receive renewable energy credits. The energy credits will come handy and enable the company to meet the carbon compliance requirement of the state if any stipulated in future.
