India Yet to Tap Geothermal Power

According to Prof Sandeep Singh, a geological expert who is employed in IIT-Roorkee, India has vast prospects of becoming a leading green geothermal power producer by the year 2035. He emphasized the efforts to tap and generate the cheap and eco- friendly power.

In his presentation made in 'Technology Vision 2035' seminar, organized by Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University and Technology, Information, Forecasting and Assessment Council (TIFAC), New Delhi, he underlined the need to generate geothermal power from untapped sources in the Himalayan region. According to him, the region has vast potential to assist geothermal power generation to enable India to achieve its mission to become a developed nation by 2035.

He claimed that geothermal power generation in India still remains at its earlier stages and even the geothermal plants established in places such as Tapovan, Jalgaon and Puga Valley are yet to become functional to generate power.
