A wind turbine manufacturer, Vestas has chosen solar panels from SolarWorld to power its headquarters in North America.
The news was announced by Sam Adams, Mayor of Portland just outside the downtown Portland-located Meier & Frank Depot building. The 102 year old building will be the future home for the continental Head Office of Vestas.
The redevelopment of the building will incorporate a 112 kW solar photovoltaic system supplied by SolarWorld over its rooftop. The installation when completed will become the largest rooftop PV installation in the central business district of Portland. The photovoltaic system will incorporate several environmentally-friendly features that will enable the building to obtain LEED Platinum certification. The solar panels will generate enough power to meet nearly 12% of the energy requirements of the new construction.
The building construction slated for completion in spring, 2012 will provide around 172,000 sq.ft. area including an additional construction on the fifth floor having an eco-friendly roof terrace and garden. The building will provide retail and rental space on the first floor.
Gerding Edlen, the owner of the building is also in the redevelopment team along with Skanska, the general contractor and a company known for its green building practices. The solar facility for the building will be designed and installed by the Portland-based, E C Company.
