The AURORALIA award for the third year will be presented to the chosen three cities that have shown commitment in having urban lighting with novel eco-friendly solutions.
The award, a joint effort of Lighting Urban Community International organization (LUCI ) and Schréder Lighting will be presented during the Light Festival in Lyon on 8th December 2011. For the awards presented in the years 2009 and 2010, over 35 cities or urban communities have submitted their applications. The selected three winners will receive the 1st prize: €6000 - 2nd prize: €3000 - 3rd prize: €1500.
The AURORALIA award is presented to three cities that have completed novel lighting projects paving the way for the reduction in ecological impacts utilizing conspicuous and inventive methods. The award an effort of LUCI and Schréder will draw attention to the perfect nature of awarded submissions and provide inspiration to other cities to follow.
In 2009, the city of Berlin was awarded the first prize for its thousand luminaires lighting plan having high-tech luminaires that can save around 63% of energy without giving up its famous romantic setting. The illumination of Lyon, France set at Lycée St Just, a prominent city landscape, has won the second prize and the entry utilized solar panels to meet nearly one third of the power required to light the building. Westminster, England received the third prize for restoring the Westbourne Green residential locale with new lights to bring down the energy usage by 60%.
The 2010 first prize was given to Budapest, Hungary for illuminating the Liberty Bridge with LED bulbs while Geneva, Switzerland received the second prize for developing a specific LED lighting to illuminate one fifth of Lake Geneva’s urban shores to save 30% energy. Tilburg, a Dutch city received the third prize by achieving 54% reduction in its energy bills by illuminating the Cityring mixing practicality of usage with art.
