Centre for Urban History and David Wilson Library at the University of Leicester have announced the arranging of a one-day symposium titled, ‘Industrial Inheritance: Exploring Leicester’s Manufacturing Past,’ at Ogden Lewis Suite, Fielding Johnson South Wing, University of Leicester on Saturday the 17th of September.
The conference will utilize the collected digital sources to provide a peep into the rich industrial legacy of Leicester. The conference will research into its manufacturing industry during the 19th and 20th century. The symposium will include discussions by Rowan Roenisch from the Victorian Society of Leicester, Colin Hyde from the Oral History Archive of East Midlands and Professor Robert Colls of the School of Historical Studies. The Special Collections arranged during the symposium will have a presentation of Joan Skinner collection of factory buildings by Evelyn Cornell from the library. Arrangements have also been made to present the archive of digital sources online.
According to Professor Simon Gunn, Centre for Urban History’s Director, the city of Leicester has a proud industrial history and the University of Leicester has an exclusive collection of oral testimony, films and photographs from those who functioned in industries such as boot and shoe trade, and hosiery. The arranged conference will display these resources with an objective to retrieve its lost glory of manufacturing, which is fading fast from the landscape of Leicester.
The open and free for all conference requires registration to receive further details.
