The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) has commemorated the National Energy Awareness Month by showcasing the cost cutting and energy conserving efforts of its employees by the release of Go Green Forever stamp communications to persuade American citizens to contribute to low and no cost go green ways of life. USPS has celebrated the awareness month with the theme ‘Turn words into Action, Turn Action into Results’.
Earlier during June 2011, USPS has detailed its energy efforts in bringing down its energy usage around 30% since 2003, which can be equated to the yearly energy usage of around 100,000 houses in the USA. Its efforts to bring down its own greenhouse gas discharges by 8% since the year 2008 is said to be equivalent to the yearly energy usage of around 130,000 standard homes in the USA. The USPS attempts to cut down its energy usage has resulted in bringing down its greenhouse discharges by 50%.
USPS has plans to achieve sustainability goals such as to bring down its energy usage by around 30% by the year 2015, cut down its petroleum consumption for vehicles by 20% and increase the use of alternative fuels by 10% by the year 2015. The organization is looking forward to decreasing its greenhouse gas emissions by 20% in the year 2020.
According to Tom Day, USPS’s chief sustainability officer, over 400 employees are engaged in the Lean Green team work to execute low and no-cost ways to save energy and other natural assets to bring down the costs. He estimates that the Postal service will save over $5 million in the fiscal year 2010 due to its energy conserving efforts.
