Gehrlicher Solar, a global photovoltaics company, has commenced construction of the Perleberg Airport Solar Park in Brandenburg. The project is the largest solar power system it has ever built.
The park is a ground-mounted solar system with a total power capacity of 34 MW. It is expected to produce around 32.7 million kWh of solar power annually, which will be adequate to address the power requirements of approximately 9,300 households, each having three members.
The solar park will be built on an area spanning 87 ha, around the former military airport at Perleberg, which is between Berlin and Hamburg. Gehrlicher Solar will be building solar modules, inverters and substructures on 62 ha, while the remaining areas will used as compensation areas. Meadow breeding grounds are to be created in these compensation areas. The Perleberg Airport Solar Park will save around 32,000 t of CO2 annually.
At the symbolic start of the solar project, the mayor of the Perleberg city, Fred Fischer, the Member of State Parliament, Holger Rupprecht, and the CEO of Gehrlicher Solar, Klaus Gehrlicher, welcomed the guests. The Gehrlicher CEO thanked the regional, city authorities, landowners and tenants for their cooperation in the endeavor.
The Perleberg Airport Solar Park is expected to be connected to the power grid in May 2012.
