As many as 8,400 PV solar panels have been installed at the Dusseldorf International Airport for generating solar-based energy of the magnitude of 2MW per year. The installation of the panels is complete and they will be operational before the end of 2012.
The energy generated by the PV plant is sufficient for powering 600 households in Dusseldorf. There are plans of placing a large monitor at the departure hall of the airport for displaying the data of the actual energy generated and the reduction in the carbon dioxide emission.
The solar plant at the airport is the largest ground mounted system located within the security zone of the airport. The production of the panels begun on October and was completed in eight weeks from the production start date. The project is a joint venture between the Airport and the Grunwerke GmbH. The location at which the plant has been installed is proof of the priority shift in public and private companies towards energy management solutions.
The fact that the plant is located within the security zone of the airport promotes the Airport’s contribution towards service of environment. The CEO of the airport explained that apart from solar power the airport has also other renewable power generation systems, thereby contributing significantly towards the reduction of carbon dioxide emission.
