Solar3D, a developer of a 3D solar cell technology designed to yield the maximize conversion of the sun’s light into electricity, has announced that a new solar cell design could yield a high efficiency of 25.47%, a significant improvement over the existing technology.
The Chief Executive Officer of Solar3D, Jim Nelson stated explained that the recent tests conducted in their research facility involve a large design consisting of numerous micro 3D photovoltaic structures that constitute the design of the Solar3D cell.
The prototype of the cell is nearing completion. Once a fabrication partner is decided upon, the product will be launched in the market. Nelson added that if the results of the simulation tests reflect in the fabrication, the new cell designed by Solar3D will achieve higher conversion efficiency than any other silicon solar cells.
Unlike standard solar cells which reflect over 30% of the incident sunlight, Solar3D’s advanced solar cell technology features a 3D design with larger cell surface area. This increased space allows the solar cells to yield maximum energy from the incident sunlight. The breakthrough cell design, according to Jim Nelson, can be the answer to affordable solar power. Nelson concluded by stating that the objective at Solar3D has been to provide affordable solar power solutions to the world. If the conversion efficiency can be improved significantly, it could be possible to make it more affordable.
