PowerPlay Solar Development has commissioned and started the operation of the 2 MW photovoltaic solar facility, which is built at Berkshire School in Massachusetts. Currently, this kind of solar project is the largest operated plant at any college and school in New England.
The company together with Spire Solar Systems, a Bedford-based design builder of solar systems, designed and built this solar project. The ground-mounted solar system at the School consists of 8,332 crystalline silicon solar panels, which are produced by SolarWorld in the United States. SolarWorld is a global provider of crystalline, high-quality solar-power technology.
Around 45% of electricity needed for the school will be produced by this solar plant, which is part of the sustainability master plan of the school. Berkshire students submitted this sustainability plan to the School's Board of Trustees. This plan gives a significant cornerstone for the school to reach carbon neutrality by 2016.
According to PowerPlay Solar Development’s senior development partner, Steven Levine, the Berkshire School has shown its environmental responsibility through this solar project installation. The company was delighted to develop this remarkable solar plant to support the energy and sustainability goals of the school.
Mike Maher, head of Berkshire School, stated that this is a great opportunity for the school, in the educational, financial and environmental segments.
