An American producer of high-efficiency crystalline silicon photovoltaic (PV) solar cells and high-power solar modules, Suniva has partnered with FLS Energy and PowerWorks for commissioning the 500 kW rooftop solar system at the Raleigh Convention Center in North Carolina. This is the second largest convention center solar project in the U.S.
Suniva solar modules were chosen to power the Raleigh Convention Center based on the request from the City of Raleigh. The solar array will include nearly 2,080 Suniva modules and covers 50% of the convention center’s rooftop. The CEO of PowerWorks, Al Fiore stated that the collaboration of the three companies has ensured that the Raleigh Convention Center and the City of Raleigh will benefit from one of the most-efficient solar systems in the region. The project is expected to be completed in April 2012.
The solar array is anticipated to minimize the energy consumption of Raleigh by approximately 725,000 kWh per year, which is equal to eliminating 500 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere. Suniva’s high-efficiency solar modules are also used in an electric vehicle (EV) charging station near the convention center.
Bryan Ashley, Suniva’s Chief Marketing Officer, remarked that the convention center solar installation project will help meet the future renewable energy demands of Raleigh.
