Cox Enterprises, one of the leading communications, media and automotive services companies, has expanded its alternative energy projects with the deployment of five new fuel cells at Cox Communications facility in San Diego.
In total, the company has performed 14 alternative energy projects in California. The projects collectively eliminate 15,500 tons of carbon emissions from the atmosphere, which is equal to removing 367 cars off the road.
Among the five units, two 200 kW fuel cells power 100% of Cox Communications’ facility on Copley Drive and the remaining three units power 90% of the company’s facility on N. Cuyamaca Street. The new fuel cells are more eco-friendly as they are powered by biogas. They use an exclusive fuel cell technology, which effectively converts fuel into energy through an electro-chemical process with no combustion and dangerous particles.
Steve Bradley, Director of energy, alternative energy and business continuity, stated that 25% of the company’s electricity needs in California is met through their alternative energy projects.
The earlier alternative energy installations of Cox Enterprises in California include one 100 kW PV solar system at Cox Communications facility in Rancho Santa Margarita, two 400 kW fuel cells in Rancho Santa Margarita, two 400 kW fuel cells at Cox Communications’ building in San Diego and four 100 kW fuel cell systems at KTVU-TV located in Oakland. The company has also made alternative energy installations in Portland, Oregon; Bordentown, New Jersey; Macon, Georgia; Atlanta, Georgia; and Phoenix, Arizona.
