Iberdrola Renewables, one of the world’s largest energy companies, has signed a 100 MW power purchase agreement with San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E). Under the terms of the agreement, Iberdrola Renewables will supply electricity from its Manzana wind farm, which is now under construction in Kern County, California.
The contract will support SDG&E’s initiatives to meet requirements of California’s renewable portfolio standard (RPS).
The Manzana project will deliver about 189 MW of power. This will decrease green house gas emissions, which is equivalent to removal of over 21,500 cars off the road. The project utilizes GE turbine nacelles that include brake assemblies, drive trains, gearboxes and generators. Over 70% of the nacelles have been manufactured at GE’s manufacturing facilities in Tehachapi and the remaining nacelles were made in Florida. Other material and equipment suppliers of the project include Granite Construction, Holliday Readymix, Pacific Coast Steel and Bragg Crane Service.
The Manzana wind power program will support the local market with property tax payments. The taxes will support library, fire, public health, schools and other services in the county. Blattner Energy manages the construction work and subcontracts are offered to several companies, including MCM Construction, Granite Construction, PAR Electrical Contractors, CSI Contractors and Conco Pumping.
