Solar and Wind KC, an affiliated company of Homoly Construction, has installed a large 75 kW solar photovoltaic system at the Travois’ headquarters in Crossroads Arts District, Kansas City, Missouri.
Travois is a group of five companies that deliver housing and economic development services to American Indian tribes.
The renewable energy system, which comprises 330 solar panels, has been fixed on a steel canopy located on the rooftop of the building. The largest solar canopy is estimated to generate approximately 90,000 kWh of energy per year that is sufficient to totally balance the company’s annual requirements. The total annual production by the solar energy system is expected to be equivalent to reducing emissions from a car driving about 235,000 miles. The solar array will meet the energy needs of Travois’ headquarters for a minimum of 25 years.
Andrew Homoly, Founder of Solar and Wind KC, stated that they have used the expertise of Homoly Construction to design and build the largest solar canopy. This has helped to solve a major problem as the roof of the building was already at its structural weight limit.
Travois has utilized solar refunds provided by KCP&L as well as the bonus depreciation tax and the federal Business Energy Investment Tax Credit benefits offered by the federal Tax Relief to finance the 75 kW project. This financial support has decreased the start-up cost of the project by 85%.
