California-based photovoltaic solar development company, SPI Solar has acquired the essential contracts and authorizations to develop a solar energy facility (SEF) in Rhodope Prefecture, Greece. The new 1 MW utility-scale, fixed-tilt ground-mount facility is the company’s third major solar project in the country.
Once the construction is completed, the SEF will produce cost-effective, sustainable electricity for a longer period of time. The Greek Public Power Corporation (PPC) will purchase the electricity generated by the 1 MW facility through a power purchase agreement (PPA) signed with SPI Solar for 20 years.
SPI Solar has partnered with Global Energy Services and SDL Solar to find out the build-ready project, to execute on-site technical due diligence and to deliver project oversight throughout the SEF construction process. The company has planned to offer operations and maintenance services for the facility after the construction is completed. The Rhodope SEF will utilize high-performance solar modules from LDK Solar. The company’s CEO, Stephen Kircher stated that the project will generate a net economic gain on various levels and will also create several local jobs. Private investors in Greece will own and operate the utility-scale facility.
In August 2011, SPI Solar has made announcement on its first project, a 4.4 MW solar energy facility in the Evros region. The second project, a 2 MW plant in the Evros region, was announced in January 2012. With the addition of the Rhodope SEF project, SPI Solar now has a total of 7.4 MW under development in Greece.
