MidAmerican Energy, based in Des Moines, Iowa, has awarded an additional wind turbine order to Siemens Energy, a supplier of a complete range of power generation products, solutions and services, for a 407.1 MW project expansion in Iowa in 2012.
The order follows after the successful completion of MidAmerican Energy’s 593.4 MW wind projects in 2011. In November 2011, both the companies have signed an agreement to supply additional 176 wind turbines that will be used for three projects in Iowa. Each turbine has a capacity to generate 2.3 MW of energy.
Under the terms of the agreement, Siemens will deliver SWT-2.3-108 wind turbines for MidAmerican Energy's three Iowa projects: 101.2 MW Morning Light project in Adair County; 200.1 MW Eclipse wind project in Audubon and Guthrie counties; and 103.5 MW Vienna project, which is anticipated to be constructed in Tama and Marshall counties. In addition, Siemens will supply one additional 2.3 MW turbine for Rolling Hills project of MidAmerican Energy.
Once the construction is completed, the wind turbines will deliver clean electricity to over 120,000 average U.S. homes. Siemens will manufacture the turbine blades and nacelles at its facilities located in Hutchinson, Kansas and Fort Madison, Iowa.
Mark Albenze, CEO of Siemens Energy's Americas Business Unit, Wind Power Division, remarked that once the three projects are completed, Siemens and MidAmerican Energy will have delivered a total of 1 GW of safe and environmentally friendly wind-powered energy to about 300,000 average U.S. households within two years.
