Longsol, an owner and operator of solar power projects in Spain, France and the U.S., and MetLife, a global provider of insurance, allowances and employee benefit programs, have acquired SunEdison’s 30 MW solar farm in Webberville, Texas. The solar project has commenced its operations in December 2011.
Longsol owns and operates 12 solar farms in Europe and this is the 13th one in the U.S. The solar project is anticipated to produce over 1.4 billion kWh of renewable energy for more than 25 years. The amount of energy generated is sufficient to power over 136,000 average homes in the U.S and is equivalent to reducing over 1.6 billion pounds of carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere.
RES Americas has carried out the construction work and it will be responsible for operation and maintenance of the Webberville solar system for the next five years. Later, SunEdison will manage the solar farm for 20 years. Through a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA), Austin Energy will purchase the energy from the farm at a fixed rate over the entire lifespan of the project.
Chris Bailey, VP of SunEdison’s Project Finance & Corporate Development, North America, stated that the company is committed to expanding its utility-scale development technology and offering high quality renewable energy projects to its financial and utility partners.
