Suncore Photovoltaics, a joint venture of EMCORE and San'an Optoelectronics, has commenced production at its facility in Huainan, China. The joint venture was established in July 2010 and it started the construction of the Huainan facility in February 2011.
The completion of Phase-I construction and the commencement of concentrating photovoltaic (CPV) module production was celebrated on February 21, 2012.
The Chief Operating Officer of EMCORE, Christopher Larocca, noted that China is growing as the most potential market for CPV in the world and Suncore has a great opportunity to expand in this market.
The Huainan production plant is the first phase of Suncore’s three-phase construction project. Currently, the EMCORE- San'an JV facility has a production capacity of 200 MW CPV modules per year. The plant employs an advanced automated production line. Suncore has received a purchase order for 50 MW CPV modules for an installation project in Golmud, China. EMCORE supplies high-efficiency terrestrial solar cells, which is currently in production, for the project. The Golmud project is expected to be the world’s largest CPV installation after completion.
Dr. Charlie Wang, Suncore Photovoltaics’ President and CEO, remarked that the company has shown tremendous growth through solar projects in China. Suncore is well established to be the major CPV supplier for power utility and commercial sectors in China by offering a cost-effective, long-term product to its customers.
EMCORE provides solar power components and systems for concentrator photovoltaic (CPV) applications, while San'an Optoelectronics specializes in CPV production and deployment in China.
