The UK Government has announced a long-term strategy for developing carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies that can cut down carbon emissions in the UK. Further, the government has again launched the £1 billion contest to improve large scale CCS projects.
The Government will come across many challenges to make this strategy a success. According to a new report, these challenges can be positively solved.
The project was conducted for two years under UK Energy Research Centre (UKERC).This report analyzes the economic, technical, social and financial challenges faced by CCS technologies and whether these technologies can achieve UK energy objectives.
The report has analyzed the challenges faced by CCS technologies in the past and concluded that the issues faced earlier and now are alike. CCS technologies have succeeded in the past by solving these issues adequately. In a similar manner, the current CCS strategy can also become a success if the industrial sector and the government take the right steps.
However, even if significant progress is achieved in the CCS technology development through the re-launched program, the government and the industrial sector will still face complex choices.
To overcome these issues, the authors of the report have identified four important areas that must be considered by the government. These areas include making proper decisions to keep choices open, designing financial support, considering the time taken for developing CCS technologies, and dealing with complex storage liabilities.
