Directed by Icelandic professor, Horsteinn I. Sigfusson, and guided by Tomsk Polytechnic Research University, a revolutionary project will be demonstrated at Russia Day between 23 and 27 of May, 2012 in Germany, during the international exhibition Hannover Messe-2012.
This project is based on the action of eco-safe fuel cells that can detach oxygen from hydrogen as a part of electrolysis process. The demo will be presented at the round table on Tuesday 24 April, 2012, under the title "The role of hydrogen in the energy sector: Russian research and innovations," at Hannover Messe.
Hydrogen fuel cells generate zero emissions. This eco-friendly solution promotes high performance and energy efficiency during operation, enabling the conversion of 60%-70% of fuel energy into electricity. The integration of cell fuel technology in vehicles besides minimizing CO2 emissions, acts as a source of power for distributed energy units. High capacity fuel cells function as backup power generators, and its high operating temperature (800-1000 C) supports CHP industrial application.
This green fuel can warm low-rise buildings and also be incorporated in aircraft, and submarines. This project has proved its efficiency in the transportation industry. Based on this technology, a German automotive plant has produced three buses specific for Iceland. Such buses have achieved contracts in several European countries, Portugal, and the United Kingdom.
This fuel cell technology can be further upgraded following equal support from business and public organizations. Russian Ministry of Education and Science and Global Energy Non-Profit Partnership have supported this project’s implementation.
