American Public University System (APUS), which provides online degree programs, has installed a new solar system near its Financial Center in West Virginia. The installation is a follow up of the sustainable practices adopted by APUS. In fact in 2010, APUS constructed an energy-efficient Academic Center, and has completed building its Financial Center before schedule.
Over 1600 solar panels are included in the solar system. These panels were made in America and were installed on a canopy structure covering the parking area located behind the Financial Center. Furthermore, 15 charging stations have been installed to recharge hybrid or electric vehicles of APUS’ employees or visitors. Additionally, the solar panel carports will remove the “heat island” effect and keep the asphalt cool.
About 50% of APUS’ energy requirements will be met by the power produced through the panels. The electricity generated is sufficient to power 30 average homes or produce 480,000 kWh power per year, and equivalent to 120 travelers commuting a distance of 15,000 miles per annum.
A charter signatory of the American College and University Presidents' Climate Commitment, APUS is striving to reduce its already low carbon footprint in the forthcoming years. It has adopted different sustainable practices including utilization of eco-friendly cleaning products, a complete recycling program, re-usage policy, and an employee carpooling program.
APUS provides 87 online degree programs, which help the working people to study the discipline of their own interest. The degrees are offered under American Military University and American Public University.
