Global Environment Outlook (GEO-5) report, the flagship publication of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), will be released on June 6, 2012 at the National Press Club in Washington, DC.
The GEO-5 report is the fifth publication in the series. The report reviews the status of the global environment in detail. It evaluates developments in achieving major objectives in the fields of wastes, chemicals, atmosphere, biodiversity, land and water. It also covers improvements made in fulfilling globally agreed goals, discusses successful policy choices that show promise in accelerating their realization, and includes actions to be taken by the global community as well as countries to upgrade sustainable development.
The GEO-5 report will be released almost concurrently in all UNEP regions, which include Brussels, Geneva, Beirut, Abu Dhabi, New York, Beijing, New Delhi, Addis Ababa, Nairobi and Rio de Janeiro, on the same day. The report release is timely as the UN Conference on Sustainable Development or Rio+20 will be conducted from June 20 to 22, 2012 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The event will feature presentations and a Q&A session. UNEP is the environment authority in the United Nations system. UNEP Regional Office for North America’s task is to develop support for UNEP's work in the region, to promote teamwork on environmental problems between North America and international community, and to foster meaningful responses to global environmental issues.
