TU Delft to Launch Green Village Project

Delft University of Technology (TU Delft), one of the most comprehensive technical universities in the Netherlands, announced that it will launch its Green Village project on June 7, 2012.

The Green Village

The development of a sustainable sea container village is expected to commence in the beginning of 2013 and will be located at the TU Delft campus. Ad van Wijk, a professor of Future Energy Systems and a renewable energy entrepreneur, has initiated the Green Village project.

The initial phase of the project will include 20 to 40 discarded sea containers, which will be altered into a restaurant, meeting places, shops, working areas and labs. The sea containers will use advanced, experimental energy systems and eliminate the use of sewage, cable system, electricity and water supplies. The village will serve as a meeting place for entrepreneurs, business people, scientists, students and other interested parties.

The village will receive electricity from fuel cells, wind turbines and solar panels, and will have drinking water from rainwater. It will be built with a direct current (DC) network to eliminate energy loss. The village will receive lighting, atmosphere and signaling simultaneously from LED lighting mounted in products, buildings, walls and bridges. It will serve as a temporary lab for use by several businesses. They can purchase or hire a container to test their energy product, technology or service in a specific condition. In addition, the businesses can leverage the presence of TU Delft’s researchers and students.

During the launching ceremony, TU Delft will introduce a unique model of the Harp, an innovative wind turbine, solar power plant and conference centre.
