Scientists from the University of Stuttgart have developed a nacelle-based Lidar system that is a combination of an in-house developed scanner unit and a commercial system.
This nacelle-based Lidar system was mounted on the Controls Advanced Research Turbine CART2 that has two blades. The Controls Advanced Research Turbine CART2 was placed in the National Wind Technology Center’s test site in Boulder, Colorado, USA.
This nacelle-based Lidar system uses a remote sensing technique also known as the Lidar technology (Light detection and ranging). This Lidar technology enables measuring the wind field in specific distances and it allows the laser to measure the wind field and the scanner to permit the laser beam to be the steered in any direction.
Based on the Lidar technology, the Controls Advanced Research Turbine CART2 reacts to the inflowing wind field even before the wind field reaches the rotor of the turbine CART2 so that energy production is increased and loads are minimized.
The Controls Advanced Research Turbine CART2 is capable of being designed with less weight based on the reduction of loads in a lifespan of 20 years.
