Daimler North America’s wholly-owned subsidiary, car2go North America has reported that the company will extend its carsharing operations in the United States and Canada this summer, making urban transportation easier, more flexible, and more accessible.
The official launch of car2go’s carsharing operations in Toronto will be on June 30, 2012, in Calgary on July 21, 2012, and in Miami, Florida on July 28, 2012. Registration for membership for the aforementioned cities can be done at car2go.com, with free driving time and free membership available for a limited period.
car2go developed at the Daimler Business Innovation Unit located in Stuttgart, Germany, four years ago. At present, the company provides over 4,000 fuel-efficient smart fortwo vehicles, which include 625 electric drive cars, to over 100,000 members for shared use globally. car2go members have undertaken over two million trips in total across 11 cities globally. The count of car2go, trips, members and cities has increased over two times in the last six months.
Each car2go North American city has an extensive network of 200-300 fuel-efficient smart fortwo cars, which can be used by members anytime. The company provides first-of-its-kind free-floating carsharing service. Members can use any car2go from anywhere inside the car2go Home Area. There is no predetermined amount of time and members can use a vehicle as long as they require it. They can park the vehicle at their destination. After ending the rental through card swiping on the windshield reader, the vehicle becomes available for the next member.
