AT&T has released its 2011 Sustainability Report, which highlights the efforts taken by the company’s networks, employees and customers to create a more sustainable future.
Key efforts highlighted in the report include the following:
- Annualized energy savings of $42 million as a result of over 4,500 energy efficiency projects
- Use of a plastic comprising as high as 30% plant-based materials for AT&T-branded accessory packaging has been started
- Fulfilled a commitment of $100 million to AT&T's Aspire education program, with the foundation laid for an extended commitment of $250 million planned over a five-year period, proclaimed this year.
This first-of-its-kind interactive report enables consumers to engage, communicate and also donate for community-improving nonprofits. Chief Sustainability Officer and Senior Vice President-Public Affairs, Charlene Lake stated that the company empowers consumers to engage in more sustainable lives, encourages them to share this experience, and allows them to donate for nonprofits through Causes.com.
AT&T is involved in community strengthening activities by upgrading education and encouraging retirees and employees to take part in volunteer activities. The company’s employees and retirees donated over six million hours of time, which is worth over $133 million, to community strengthening activities.
AT&T is focusing on better energy management, making investments in alternative fuel sources, promoting the utilization of renewable resources. With 3,469 alternative-fuel vehicles, AT&T is now able save over 2.5 million gallons of unleaded gasoline in this year. The company’s own use of technology resulted in logging over 2.9 million telepresence minutes, thus saving roughly $13.9 million in travel dollars and eliminating carbon dioxide emissions of over 8,261 metric tons.
In 2011, AT&T introduced Connect For Good, a first-of-its-kind corporate Causes.com community. In tribute of the introduction of the 2011 Sustainability Report, the company allowed viewers of the report to support nonprofits with donations through the AT&T Connect For Good community. Since its establishment, the AT&T Connect For Good Community has donated over $239,000 to charities.
