The international non-profit educational group, Green Plants for Green Buildings (GPGB) is announcing a month long challenge to begin on Earth Day, "Give Plants a Chance." Reaching out to both undeclared and overt indoor plant benefit nonbelievers, GPGB is hoping longstanding skeptics will take this opportunity to, as the saying goes: Try it. You'll Like It. "Please, don't take our word for it," declares GPGB President, McRae Anderson of St. Paul, MN. "While vast bodies of scientific data verify the psychological and environmental benefits of indoor plants, for some there really is no outside data that can convince except direct personal experience," continued Anderson who has won lifetime achievement awards for his innovative and environmental interior plant installations.
"We decided to mount 'Give Plants a Chance' when we discovered that a considerable portion of the earth-wise demographic had simply never been exposed to the facts about indoor plants and were not yet made aware that many indoor plant species are proven to help lift moods, encourage creative thinking, help to boost productivity and assist in the absorption of a long list of common household and office toxins," states M.J. Gilhooley, GPGB Coordinator.
GPGB urges anyone who either was not aware of, or consciously chose to mistrust the plant benefit statistics, to 'Give Plants a Chance' and pick a room or even a small space (home or office) where either you or others you know mingle. Place one plant per every 100 sq. ft. In support of your experiment, the GPGB office will provide free educational materials outlining the ten best plants by e-mailing [email protected]. GPGB recommends keeping the plants in the same area and provide the minimal care necessary for four weeks. At the end of that month you are requested to either fax or e-mail your observations describing the impact the plants had in 500 words or less.
