Frito-Lay Deploys All-Electric Delivery Trucks in California

PepsiCo owned Frito-Lay has deployed all-electric delivery trucks in California. The company is in the process of deploying 275 electric trucks in the United States by the end of 2012.

California alone will have the largest deployment of 105 all-electric delivery trucks. Frito-Lay representatives were joined by Edmund G. Brown Jr., Governor of California, Gregory Winterbottom, Chairman of Mobile Source Air Pollution Reduction Review Committee and Matt Rodriquez, Secretary of Environmental Protection Agency, California to announce the latest addition to their growing all-electric fleet of trucks.

Frito-Lay achieved a significant milestone of driving one million all-electric miles in May 2012. The initial deployment of electric trucks in California benefitted Frito-Lay by savings in fuel amounting to 50,000 gallons and reduction in greenhouse gases by 1 million pounds. Once all the 105 trucks are rolled out in California, the annual fuel savings is estimated to be 200,000 gallons and reduction in greenhouse gases to be 4.5 million pounds. The trucks will ply from all Frito-Lay distribution centers in California, namely, San Diego, Alameda, La Mirada, San Jose, Manteca, City of Industry and Torrance.

The Mobile Source Air Pollution Reduction Review Committee (MSRC), the California Air Resources Board run Hybrid Truck Bus Voucher Incentive Project and the California Energy Commission provided the necessary funding to launch the electric fleet for Frito-Lay in California. This initiative is in line with PepsiCo’s commitment towards environment sustainability measures, especially in reduction of greenhouse gas and fuel.
