Graceland University has inked a new partnership to get access to UhaulCarShare’s sophisticated car-sharing service to allow more transportation options for the university staff, faculty, and students and enable them to maintain a sustainable lifestyle in one convenient cost-effective packaging. Each shared car eliminates the use of 15 to 20 personally owned vehicles, thus improving air quality and decreasing parking congestion.

Program Manager at UhaulCarShare, Cassandra Allen stated that this service has endless environmental benefits. However, the potential lies primarily on the change in lifestyle due to the lasting impact on the routine behavior of individuals. The car sharing service avoids the requirement to own a car without compromising the flexibility it offers. It allows people to increase their usage of public transit without sacrificing the convenience of a car whenever required, thus benefiting the entire society.
UhaulCarShare will place a Mazda 3 on campus during the beginning of the 2012 fall semester. The vehicle will be accessible round-the-clock by all staff, faculty and students aged 18 and above, and its parking will be at the North Events Parking Lot (north of Helene Center). The company claims that it offers the industry’s lowest starting price point.
Graceland University Sustainability Coordinator, Jennifer Abraham-White stated the idea of sharing resources, like the new shared vehicle, is the core of novel and sustainable economies in addition to helping in building community. The Graceland University Sustainability Office anticipates providing the innovative car sharing service to its students and Lamoni residents through the UhaulCarShare program, which also shows the university’s commitment to responsible education and pro-environmental action.
