Children in Greater Toronto Area Learn About Water Conservation at BASF Kids’ Lab

BASF Canada and Earth Rangers are working together to bring Kids’ Lab, a series of hands-on chemistry workshops developed by BASF for students in grades 4-6, to 30 classrooms across the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) this fall. The program will engage 800 students in 2013, at no cost to the schools or participants.

Each interactive 45-minute “Operation Filtration” session will include a hands-on activity which allows students to recognize water as one of the world’s most precious resources and to learn about the various methods of separation used to remove impurities from waste water.

“As the kids’ conservation organization, Earth Rangers is dedicated to leveraging children's passion for the environment as a way to encourage a more active interest in science," said Peter Kendall, Executive Director, Earth Rangers. “Delivering the Kids’ Lab program in schools is a natural extension of our education programs, providing students with a hands-on experience that teaches them about the importance of water conservation and the role chemistry plays in protecting our environment.”

Students will learn about the Kids’ Lab mascot, morpH™, a cartoon-like element that can “morph” into any of the basic forms of matter – a solid, liquid or gas. Each child receives a lab apron and goggles. When the program ends, everyone receives a certificate of participation and a pouch filled with other take-home items.

“BASF is committed to science education because we realize that today’s students will be the innovators and leaders of our future,” said Carles Navarro, President of BASF Canada. “Through our Kid’s Lab program we help make science fun and encourage kids to explore the connections to chemistry in the world around them . This program has been met with a lot of success in other countries and we are excited to bring it to Canada.”

Developed by BASF to help children explore and understand the important role chemistry plays in their everyday lives, Kids’ Lab was established at BASF’s global headquarters in Germany in 1997. The program is currently available in 16 countries worldwide. Since 2010, more than 20,500 students have participated in Kids' Lab programs throughout the United States and Mexico.

In 2013, the Kid’s Lab program will be delivered in GTA schools in direct proximity to BASF Canada's head office in Mississauga, ON, starting with a school in Georgetown ON, this week. The company aims to expand the program to additional communities where it operates in 2014.
