NYSERDA Awards OnForce Solar Over $20M for Large-Scale Commercial Solar Projects

OnForce Solar, a leading provider of solar electric systems, announced today that the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) has awarded the company additional funding to develop and construct large-scale commercial solar projects in New York State under Governor Cuomo’s NY-Sun Initiative.

Since the inception of the program, OnForce Solar has received in excess of $20M from NYSERDA, and is one of the most successful winners of NYSERDA awards under this competitive bidding program.

Governor Cuomo launched the NY-Sun initiative in 2012 to significantly increase the amount of solar power installed annually at customer sites in New York State. Under NY-Sun, which brings together and expands existing programs administered by NYSERDA, New York Power Authority (NYPA) and Long Island Power Authority (LIPA), a total of 299 megawatts of solar photovoltaic capacity has been installed or is under development, more than was installed in the entire prior decade. Through these clean energy projects, approximately 145,000 tons of greenhouse gas emissions will be avoided each year, the equivalent of removing 29,000 cars from the roads.

Charles Feit, CEO of OnForce Solar commented, “We are very grateful for the continued support of Governor Cuomo and the NY-Sun Initiative, and NYSERDA. This and past initiatives allow us to help New York businesses reduce their energy expenses and carbon footprint. These projects would not be possible without their support.”

Three of the four solar projects awarded in this round of funding are located in New York City in the Bronx and one solar project is located in Westchester County in the City of Yonkers. Combined, these projects will generate a total of 2.291 MW. The environmental benefits of these projects are substantial: by the end of the first year, 3,634,601 pounds of CO2 emissions will have been averted; by year 25 that number increases to 85,616,491 pounds. “In addition to the environmental benefits of converting to a renewable, clean energy source,” said Feit, “the owners of these businesses will immediately and substantially reduce their energy costs.”

Southern New York businesses are burdened with some of the highest energy costs in the nation. Converting to solar energy has become a more viable option in New York State due to a combination of state and federal incentives, lower solar panel prices, and solar financing options.
