Anaergia Inc., is pleased to announce that Michigan State University has been presented a Project of the Year Award from the American Biogas Council for the Michigan State University South Campus Anaerobic Digester. The innovative facility, designed and built by Anaergia, not only generates renewable energy, but also provides new sources of revenue and serves as an educational and outreach platform for one of the largest Universities in the United States.
The anaerobic digestion facility generates approximately 3,000 MWh per year of renewable energy by processing organic waste from campus dining halls, food processing facilities and University farms. In addition to renewable energy for campus use, the facility also diverts nearly 10,000 tons per year of organic waste from landfills and wastewater treatment plants.
"This is a great day for Michigan State University and Anaergia. All the hard work in planning and construction undertaken by the University and the Anaergia team of engineers and technicians has been rewarded. The entire team including engine supplier 2G Energy of Florida and the contractor, Weiland Davco based in Lansing, Michigan are proud of the final product," stated Bernard Sheff, PE, Vice President of Agriculture at Anaergia. Mr. Sheff is a graduate of the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Michigan State University.
"It's an honor to receive this recognition. This is a unique project as it's one of the largest operating anaerobic digesters on a University campus in the United States. Through collaboration with Anaergia and our teaching, research and outreach programs, we are developing new sustainable energy solutions that will have a positive impact in all regions of the world," added Dana Kirk, Ph.D., PE, Michigan State University, Department of Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering and Manager of the Anaerobic Digestion Research and Education Center (ADREC).
"This anaerobic digestion project not only advances the environmental sustainability initiatives of the University, but also serves as a great platform to inspire the next generation of leaders," said Steve Watzeck, CEO of Anaergia Inc. "It is an honor that Michigan State University and the project partners were recognized for this innovative project by the American Biogas Council."
The American Biogas Council is an industry association which represents over 200 companies dedicated to maximizing the production and use of biogas from organic waste. Michigan State University was awarded the Institutional Biogas Project of the Year Award as it excelled in innovation, technology, collaboration and managing complex systems.
