Peterborough based ELeather Group is celebrating Earth Day to highlight the need to use sustainable materials. ELeather,a manufacturer of sustainable, engineered leather that saves thousands of tonnes of leather waste from going to landfill, is championing one of their employees in an attempt to swap his driving commute for a run.
ELeather’s Head of Sustainability, Lee Whitton, is going to run to, and from, work every day in April until Earth Day (22nd April). His employer, is championing his efforts by pledging to donate two trees for every mile Lee runs to Forrest for Peterborough with the total just shy of 500 trees.
The campaign highlights how we can all, businesses and consumers, tackle climate change in our own ways. From personal commitments such as running in place of driving, reducing plastic use, eating less meat, or choosing goods made with sustainable or recycled materials.
“Since ELeather production began, we’ve recycled thousands of tonnes of leather waste to make a luxury material that can be used in a multitude of applications. Our materials are manufactured in a responsible way that comes at a fraction of the environmental cost, compared to leather. We’ve been working with many global brands for over ten years to help reduce their environmental impact and now we want to make consumers aware of environmentally friendly material options available to them today” said Lee Whitton, ELeather’s Head of Sustainability.
The company has two production facilities based in Peterborough. Their materials have been used in aviation (four of the world’s largest airlines have their seats upholstered in ELeather) and public transport. Since 2017 they have also been supplying their material to Nike for the production of their “Flyleather” shoes including staples such as Air Force 1 or Cortez shoe models. Most recently, a sustainable pet accessories company, Project Blu have launched their ELeather collection both in Europe and US.
