Arbonics, a leading carbon removal developer in Europe, has launched in Sweden through a strategic partnership with Treebula, the country’s largest digital forestry marketplace. This collaboration provides Swedish forest owners access to a new revenue stream from forest protection through carbon credits, allowing them to earn from the increased carbon storage in their forests.
Sweden’s forests form Europe’s largest carbon sink, covering two-thirds of the country and play a crucial role in carbon sequestration. Nearly half of these forests are privately owned by over 300,000 individuals, many of whom rely on timber harvesting for income. As climate policies shift and pressures mount to balance economic returns with environmental goals, forest owners are actively seeking new ways to generate stable income while preserving their forests.
A Private Market Opportunity for Swedish Landowners
Increasing demand for such solutions has also hit the government. Sweden’s Environmental Goals Committee has proposed a state program to incentivise carbon sequestration through delayed harvesting, but implementation is still years away. Arbonics and Treebula allow landowners to start earning from carbon storage in their forests now, rather than waiting for potential government subsidies.
Initial calculations show that up to 2 million hectares of Swedish forest could qualify for the carbon project. If just 10% of this land is shifted from intensive rotation based forestry to improved management, it could store and sequester an extra 100 million tonnes of CO₂ while providing long-term financial benefits for landowners. The potential carbon income from all eligible land exceeds €29 billion, creating a major earning opportunity for Swedish forest owners.
A Data-Driven Approach Creating a New Level of Transparency and Traceability
Through its data-first private-sector approach, Arbonics is bringing Verra’s latest Improved Forest Management methodology (VM0045) with dynamic baselines to Sweden. This ensures that landowners can participate in a science-backed and trusted carbon programme, and Arbonics has already begun onboarding landowners.
More than 65,000 landowners currently use Treebula’s platform, many of whom are looking to manage their forests in a smart, data-driven way and to earn from the carbon benefit they create. The collaboration with Arbonics not only brings new earning opportunities but also allows them to integrate carbon credits into their forest management strategies.
At the core of Treebula’s platform is a state-of-the-art AI and satellite imaging technology, which provides a unique view of the forest’s state and changes. This combined with Arbonics’ platform, which identifies areas that are optimal for carbon projects and provides growth models that predict how forest changes over time, forms the basis of carbon credit projections. Integrating the companies' expertise and tools enables a level of transparency and traceability for credits not seen before in Europe.
“We are proud to launch our offering in Sweden together with Treebula. Swedish forest owners hold natural capital worth billions, which makes forests an important asset. Through smart, data-driven forest management, they can create both economic and climate benefits, while securing their forests for future generations,” says Johan Junker, Sweden Country Manager at Arbonics.
“By combining our technologies, we’re not only offering forest owners a new revenue stream but also ensuring that corporate buyers receive high-quality, verifiable European carbon credits. This is what will drive the credibility of nature-based credits forward." said Adam Aljaraidah, Co-founder and COO of Treebula.
Why This Matters for Corporate CDR Buyers
The demand for high-integrity, nature-based carbon removals continues to grow. This can be seen with Microsoft’s 2025 purchases within the space and Symbiosis Coalition’s first request for proposals, which Arbonics also participated in. However, ensuring traceability, credibility, and long-term impact remains a key challenge for many corporate buyers.
By combining real-time forestry data and AI modeling, Arbonics and Treebula provide a transparent, scalable solution for forest carbon projects in Europe. For corporate buyers, this means higher confidence in the quality of credits, and for landowners, a financially viable way to manage forests for long-term climate benefits.
With Sweden now part of its growing market portfolio, Arbonics is accelerating its European expansion with the goal of covering 50% of European forests. The company already operates in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Finland, and is entering the UK and two additional EU countries in 2025 with the support of 5.5M EUR in funding secured at the end of 2023.
