The Canadian Gas Association commended the Ontario government for tabling the Green Energy Act and recognizing the important role that natural gas and natural gas distribution utilities have in the province's sustainable energy future particularly in the areas of expanding renewable energy, supporting new technology, and energy efficiency.
The Green Energy Act provides a range of initiatives to support the further development of renewable energy including wind, solar, biomass and biogas. This includes streamlining regulatory approvals, developing resource kits for municipalities when reviewing renewable projects, and other incentives.
"Building on the strong foundation of the natural gas distribution industry, the province will become a leader in renewable and sustainable energy systems," said Mike Cleland, CGA President and CEO, "The affordable, secure, efficient, and clean characteristics of natural gas make it the perfect backstop to an expanding renewable energy future in Ontario."
The Act also includes a number of conservation and energy efficiency initiatives and programs. These include creating a conservation information centre within the Ministry of Energy, supporting conservation programs for government buildings, and new incentives for using new green energy technology like home solar, thermal and heat exchangers, and pursuing efforts to help those with low-income.
"CGA, Enbridge Gas Distribution Inc. and Union Gas Limited have suggested that Ontario pursue a three-part strategy to help meet the province's energy needs and support environmental objectives," said Cleland. "A smart gas strategy in Ontario includes these elements included in the Act and will result in more efficient use of energy, investment in new renewable technologies, and more integrated community energy systems."
The Canadian Gas Association is the voice of Canada's natural gas delivery industry. CGA members are gas distribution companies, transmission companies, related equipment manufacturers, and other service providers involved in the delivery of natural gas in Canada.
