Enex has established a range of geothermal projects in different parts of the world. One such project is the Berlin, El Salvador (LAGEO) geothermal power plant that was established following an EPCM contract (Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Management) from the Salvadoran geothermal company, LaGeo S.A.
According to the contract, Enex was to expand the existing 56 MW Berlin power plant by another 9.3 MW. This expansion was brought about with the use of a bottoming cycle binary unit that utilizes brine. The brine was made available from two separator stations.
Enex worked in close coordination with Icelandic engineering consultants, Fjarhitun, Rafteikning and Mannvit. The existing binary power plant at the region utilizes the conventional Organic Ranking Cycle (ORC) technology for the generation of electricity. The working fluid in this plant passes through a closed loop, after which it is reused and circulated in the system.
The Berlin power plant, developed and expanded by Enex, is managed wholly by an advanced control system that ensures that the plant functions continuously without any interruptions. An advantage of this plant is that 100 percent of the working fluid can be re-injected into the system, eliminating wastage of any kind.
