First Light solar energy park, a joint venture of SkyPower and SunEdison, was named as "Solar PV (photovoltaic) Project of the Year" by the Canadian Solar Industries Association (CanSIA). This was announced in Toronto during its annual Solar Conference. First Light solar energy park generates more than 11 million kW of power per annum.
CEO and President of SkyPower, Kerry Adler, said that on behalf of CIM Group, the company’s shareholder, and the employees of SkyPower, the company is honored to receive this award from CanSIA. He added that this project demonstrated the company’s commitment to build large-scale solar projects throughout North America and said that without the support of forward-thinking governmental leaders in Canada, this project would not have materialized.
MPP for Toronto-Centre, George Smitherman, presented the award and during the function said that this project realized the dreams of solar energy for a lot of people not only in Ontario but also throughout the country.
The award for First Light solar energy park signifies the importance of clean energy as well as demonstrates what can be achieved through public and private sector collaboration.
Premier of Ontario, Dalton McGuinty, said that the government is proud in building a renewable and green energy future for the people of Ontario in collaboration with SkyPower and SunEdison Canada to supply sustainable and clean energy.
During its first year of operation, First Light will be generating electricity that is enough to power more than 1000 homes. This is equivalent to eliminating almost 1800 cars from Ontario’s roads. SkyPower Limited has almost 50 solar energy projects in pipeline, which can potentially produce more than 500 MW of solar power.
