Armenia Mountain Wind Farm Begins Commercial Operation

AES Wind Generation, a subsidiary unit of The AES Corporation, has started commercial operation for its 101 megawatt Armenia Mountain wind farm in Pennsylvania. The wind farm consisting of 67 1.5 MW GE SLE wind turbines is located in north central region of Pennsylvania in Tioga and Bradford Counties. The Armenia Mountain wind farm was developed, owned and is being operated by AES Wind Generation. The construction contractor for this project was RES Americas Construction.

Marty Crotty, President of AES Wind Generation, remarked that the company continues to consider Armenia Mountain, its first wind project in PJM Interconnection, as a crucial market in its US strategy. Crotty also stated that the company is hoping for the development of new projects in the region.

Power produced by the Armenia Mountain wind farm will be sold to Old Dominion Electric Cooperative and to Delmarva Power & Light. Purchase of 50 percent of the output under separate power purchase agreements for a period of 15 years has been signed by all the investment-grade off takers.

The worldwide operating capacity of AES Wind Generation for the year 2010 has been increased by 166 MW to 1,447 MW, which also includes Armenia Mountain and wind farms in France and China. A total of 995 megawatt of thermal and renewable projects was brought on-line in Chile, China, Cameroon, the United States, Jordon, France and Northern Ireland in the year 2009 by AES Wind Generation. The company has projects that are in construction stages in Turkey, Scotland, Panama, Bulgaria, China, Chile, Greece and France.
