Calpine Corporation to Provide Wind Integration Services to Los Angeles Department of Water and Power

Calpine Corporation has entered into a contract to provide the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) wind integration services. The requirements of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power will be met by combining the procurement of intermittent renewable wind energy generation with the vital backstop of a flexible and reliable natural gas-fired portfolio.

Calpine will provide the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power with 270 megawatts of secured power under the terms stated in the new short-term contract. The Hermiston Power Plant, Calpine’s quick-responding natural gas-fired facility, located in Hermiston and the company’s contracted transmission resources in the Northwest will be integrated with the energy output bought by the company from the Windy Point Wind Farm in Klickitat County, Wash.

Thad Hill, Chief Commercial Officer of Calpine, remarked that the company is pleased to have established its partnership with the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power. The contract according to Hill demonstrates the part played by natural gas generation in incorporating renewable generation into the marketplace enabling the load-serving entities in California to fulfill its renewable energy goals.
