Fluor Corporation announced that it has signed a contract with Elecnor S.A to provide engineering services for a new concentrated solar plant located in Badajoz, Spain. The contract value was not disclosed.
Dave Dunning, president of Fluor’s Power Group, said the demand for renewable energy is increasing to meet the shortfall in energy supply across the world. The company is in a strong position to meet the demands of clients such as Elecnor, Dunning said. He further said the growth of concentrating solar power technology across the world has increased and the company’s global engineering expertise will add value to clean energy projects.
Vice president of Fluor’s renewables business line, Brad Friesen, said the company for more than 50 years has been active in Europe and in Spain since the year 1989. Fluor is well-experienced in carrying out large-scale projects professionally utilizing local employees. In the renewable energy and thermal power sector, Fluor has nearly 30 years of experience, which the company will utilize for the Elecnor’s solar power portfolio.
For the 50-MW concentrated solar project, the Fluor will render detailed engineering and other related services. Parabolic trough mirrors will be utilized for capturing the solar energy, which will finally power a steam turbine generator to generate electricity.
The engineering for project is anticipated to be completed by 2011 second quarter. The company’s operations in Madrid and Asturias will execute the engineering with support from its operations center in southern California. Since early 2009, Elecnor has been provided with front-end support for this project by Fluor.
