General Electric manufactures different models of wind turbines. The 1.5 MW wind turbine consists of three rotor blades with a rotor diameter of 77 meters. The rotor has a total swept area of 4,657 square meters and operates at a speed that varies from 10.1 rotations per minute to 20.4 rotations per minute. The 1.5 MW wind turbine generates a power of 1,500 kilowatts at a rated wind speed of 12 meters per second. The turbine has a cut-in wind speed of 3.5 meters per second, while the cut-out wind speed varies with time. The cut-out wind speed for an average time of 600 seconds is 25 meters per second, while it is 28 meters per second for an average time of 30 seconds. For a timeframe of three seconds, the 1.5 MW wind turbine has a cut-out wind speed of 30 meters per second.
The wind turbine from General Electric can operate in extremely cold temperatures ranging from -40 degrees centigrade to +50 degrees centigrade. Some of the features incorporated in the wind turbine include hydraulic parking brakes, three phase asynchronous generator, spur gear system and lightning protection system. The control system of the 1.5MW wind turbine includes programmable logic controllers, a remote control and monitoring system.
The 1.5 MW wind turbine can be installed on conical tubular steel towers in hub heights of 100 meters. The lightning protection system of the wind turbine from General Electric includes lightning receptors and surge protection options. The lightning receptors are incorporated at the tip of the turbine blades.
