K6 S.a.S. and SunPower Corp. have signed an agreement to construct two solar photovoltaic power projects with a capacity of 1 MW each in the Puglia region of Italy. The two solar projects, which are located in Conversano and Casamassima, are planned for completion by August 2010. The power generated from the solar projects will be supplied to local consumers and will contribute to country’s national power grid.
Luciano Di Filippo of K6, said the agreement with SunPower is in line with the company’s strategy to construct highly efficient solar power project. SunPower's sun tracker technology will optimize the power production in the solar plants enabling the company to achieve its target financial model in the expected time period, Filippo said.
SunPower panels will be installed by SunPower at both the projects and will incorporate its proprietary SunPower T20 Tracker technology. The tracker technology, which follows the path of the sun during the day, enables the system to generate up to 30% more power when compared to fixed-tilt systems. The technology also reduces the required land by half to generate the same amount of power as produced by conventional dual-axis trackers.
In order to minimize the impact on the environment, the project will have pre-cast concrete foundation, which does not require penetration of the ground. Through the SunPower’s TMAC Advanced Tracker Controller, the systems can be monitored and controlled in real time.
