EDP Renewables is all set to develop its third wind farm, Tramandai Wind Farm, in Brazil with the ground-breaking ceremony held on 24th March. The Tramandai Wind Farm, which is located in Tramandai, Rio Grande do Sul, is estimated to generate 211,437 MWh per annum with an installed capacity of 70 MW. The generated power from the proposed wind farm is enough to provide electricity for a city with 200,000 inhabitants.
EDP Renewables will have a total wind power installed capacity of 84 MW when the project is completed. The company is already having two operational wind parks in Santa Catarina with combined installed capacity of 13.8 MW. The Tramandai Wind will contain 31 wind turbines, ranging from 1.9 MW to 2.3 MW. The total height of the wind turbines will be 138 meters (tower height 98 meters and blade height 40 meters), which is equal to the height of a 50-storey building. Each 2.3 MW wind turbine is capable of generating 3 to 5 million kWh per annum of green energy, which is sufficient to power 1,600 homes.
With the addition of the Tramandai Wind Farm to its energy portfolio, EDP Group's commitment to wind power is demonstrated. It also complements the company’s thermal energy and hydroelectric production. As the economy in Brazil grows, the demand for energy also increases and the country will require new alternative sources of energy. By adopting renewable energy, the country’s dependence on foreign energy is considerably reduced.
