According to a report by Ernst & Young, there are promising signs of British Columbia (BC) becoming a leading figure in the global clean technology sector. BC has recently allotted US$100 million for R&D in the green technology sector over a 3-year period. However, a more focused understanding of the challenges posed by the climate as well as a guided effort towards the development of biofuels and transportation infrastructure to meet the targets of technology organization and adoption are needed. Some of the areas of concern are the fluctuating investment scenario in Canada, absence of incentives for green technology, and the inefficient methods of procurement in the system.
Representatives analysing the cleantech sector feel that BC has natural resources that it must use to its advantage, such as the Pacific Gateway. It has good local leaders, several companies that are innovative and proactive, and effective programmes covering carbon tax. All these factors could make it a world leader in the field. And with timely financial support by the government and big industries, BC promises to become a powerhouse in the world of cleantech energy.
